The Coordinator appoints a teacher who shall act as a student counselor, with whom the student shall reach a cooperation agreement and with whom the candidate will prepare a doctoral dissertation project, and who, as a rule, will later be the mentor of the doctoral dissertation.
"By the end of the second semester, the candidate is obliged to prepare and defend an introductory (pre-doctoral) paper (in the extent of around 50,000 characters) from the scientific field in which he wants to write a doctoral dissertation.
The topic of the paper shall be approved by the Coordinator, at the proposal of the Head of the appropriate department. The paper is defended before the Commission, which is appointed by the Coordinator, on the proposal of the Head of the appropriate department."
"In the second semester, in cooperation with the counselor, the candidate shall prepare a doctoral dissertation project.
The candidate can defend his doctoral dissertation project after passing all the prescribed exams from the first and the second semester.
The candidate shall defend the doctoral dissertation project before a Commission consisting of three teachers, appointed by the Coordinator, at the proposal of the Head of the department."
After successfully defending the doctoral dissertation project, the student may submit the doctoral dissertation application to the Council.
For enrollment in the third semester of doctoral studies, the candidate is required to pass all exams from the first and second semester and to defend the doctoral dissertation project.
In the third semester, the student attends classes in two elective subjects, prepares and defends a seminar paper, and in the fourth semester he writes scientific articles and should participate in at least two scientific conferences of international importance, of which at least one must accept his paper, whereas at the other he may present his research orally. Exceptionally, in disciplines related to national issues, the candidate may be accepted to participate in leading scientific conferences with international participation, or leading scientific conferences organized by reputable scientific institutions.
"For enrollment in the fifth semester of doctoral studies, the candidate is obliged to meet the following conditions:
     - to pass the exams from the third semester;
     - to defend a seminar paper;
     - to publish at least two scientific papers, none of which is mostly part of the evaluated seminar paper in doctoral studies. The Coordinator may, at the proposal of the mentor, approve the enrollment in the fifth semester even when the scientific paper has been accepted for publication, but has not yet been published.
    - to participate in at least two scientific conferences of international importance, of which at least one must accept his paper, whereas at the other he may present his research orally. Exceptionally, in disciplines related to national issues, the candidate may be accepted to participate in leading scientific conferences with international participation, i.e. leading scientific conferences organized by reputable scientific institutions."
In the fifth and sixth semesters, the candidate is obliged to report twice on the progress of his/her doctoral research before the Commission of two teachers, elected by the Coordinator, at the proposal of the Head of the department.
The defense of the doctoral dissertation may take place after the certification of the sixth semester. The doctoral dissertation should be an original and independent scientific work, which contributes to the development of scientific thought, and which according to the methodology used and the degree of contribution to science is suitable for determining the candidate's ability to act as an independent researcher in the field of science of the Faculty where he defends the dissertation.
